Another aim of this Darwin Initiative BAP project is to review and update Ascension’s environmental legislation, which in many cases was considered outdated or completely lacking. The Wildlife Protection Ordinance, 2013 was subsequently enacted on 18th October 2013. Under this new Ordinance, many rare endemic species have been provided with legal protection for the first time. The Wildlife Protection Ordinance, 2013 can be seen here. A National Protected Areas Order, 2014 was enacted on 28th July 2014. Seven new nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries were established through this legislation. The National Protected Areas Order, 2014 can be seen here.
