Ascension’s early environmental legislation included the Wild Life (Protection) (Ascension) Ordinance, 1944. This Ordinance allowed the Governor-in-Council to make regulations forbidding or controlling the taking, capturing or killing of any wildlife in Ascension. Other early environmental legislation included Section 3 under the Ascension Land Ordinance, 1967 which, among other stipulations, stated that the Governor could withhold consent for the use of certain tracks so as to protect nesting sea turtles. The outdated Wild Life (Protection) (Ascension) Ordinance, 1944 was repealed in 2013 and replaced by the comprehensive Wildlife Protection Ordinance, 2013. |
