The Convention on Wetlands, called the Ramsar Convention, is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. Ramsar is the city in Iran where the convention was signed in 1971, and this was one of the first multilateral environmental agreements. Ramsar Sites are Wetlands of International Importance under the Convention of Wetlands. UK Government has extended ratification of the treaty to all the UKOTs and CDs. UKOTCF was commissioned by DEFRA to review existing and potential Ramsar Sites in the UK Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies. The section of this review for Ascension can be found here. |
