Early archaeological investigations of Alderney revealed physical evidence of culturedating from the Late Palaeolithic period. More recently, archaeological research has focused on the late Bronze Age/early Iron Age site of Les Huguettes and a small Roman fort at Longis Bay called the Nunnery.

The Nunnery is the oldest standing building in the Channel Islands, and the best preserved small Roman fort in Britain.
