Developing effective management plans for wetland sites is one aspect of a Darwin Initiative Challenge Fund awarded to TCI's Department of Environment and Coastal Resources in 2010, and funding is being sought to further develop this work to safeguard TCI's important wetlands.  Partners in this include the TCI's Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs (DEMA), UKOTCF, Wildfowl and Wetland Trust (WWT) and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC).

The Salinas on Salt Cay are Important Bird Areas and qualify for inclusion in Ramsar site designation.
