Pest infestations, a fall in the price of cotton and a hurricane in 1813 saw many plantation owners depart from the islands leaving their slaves behind. Slave emancipation in 1834 marked the final end of the plantation era. The descendents of the slaves found how to make good use of the natural vegetation.

Mr Alton Higgs, Middle Caicos, maintains traditional use of natural materials for basketry.
