Threats / Problems / Issues |
Pitcairn has historically suffered from landslides following heavy rain, due to unstable volcanic soils, steep slopes and de-vegetation. At the beginning of February 2012 600mm of rain fell over two days, a record since rainfall recording started on Pitcairn. The damage across the whole island was extensive. The harbour itself was filled with rocks and debris. For a complete account, including photos and how the Pitcairners dealt with this severe event, see the Pitcairn newsletter Dem Tull for February 2012. |
