Threats / Problems / Issues

Pitcairn has historically suffered from landslides following heavy rain, due to unstable volcanic soils, steep slopes and de-vegetation.  At the beginning of February 2012 600mm of rain fell over two days, a record since rainfall recording started on Pitcairn.  The damage across the whole island was extensive.  The harbour itself was filled with rocks and debris.  For a complete account, including photos and how the Pitcairners dealt with this severe event, see the Pitcairn newsletter Dem Tull for February 2012.

Goats exacerbate the risk of landslides, by clearing the vegetation from steep slopes.
