In 1982, the Falkland Islands were invaded by Argentina, which at the time was under a military dictatorship. In over 74 days of heavy combat, 253 British, 3 Falkland Islanders and over 640 Argentines lost their lives, with a further 700+ wounded (further details here: www.falklands-museum.com/1982.html). The result was that the Falklands were liberated and are now enjoying greater security and affluence under a government of their choice.
