The Cayman Islands are classified as Highly Vulnerable on the Environmental Vulnerability Index. The biodiversity of the territory is imperilled by a range of threats, with 46% of the native plant species identified as threatened with extinction (20% Critically Endangered). The biggest threat to the Caymanian flora and fauna is built development. Urban and suburban areas continue to expand in line with the rising population and demand for tourism infrastructure.
