In George Town, the remains of Fort George can be seen and are managed by the National Trust. This coral rock defence was constructed by the Caymanians in the late 18th century to protect the islands from Spanish attacks. Although the fort had fallen into disuse by the early 20th century, a particularly tall silk-cotton tree Ceiba pentandra, within its precincts, was used as a lookout post by the Home Guard during the Second World War. |
