Introduction

British Antarctic Territory is an area of Antarctica that is administered by the United Kingdom in London by staff in the Polar Regions Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. It is the largest of the UK Overseas Territories, with a somewhat arbitrary geographical delineation. It consists of all the land, including the Antarctic Peninsula, South Orkney Islands, the South Shetland Islands and other offshore islands south of 60°S latitude and between longitudes 20°W and 80°W. It includes also the surrounding ocean, including the Weddell Sea, thus amounting to a territory size of an area of 1,709,400 km2.
