Threats / Problems / Issues

The major threat to seabirds breeding or feeding within BAT is mortality associated with longline fisheries. CCAMLR introduced a compulsory suite of technical and operational measures to mitigate seabird mortality associated with both longline and trawl fisheries, which has reduced this. Unfortunately, mortality of albatrosses and petrels remains widespread and substantial in many areas outside the jurisdiction of CCAMLR (e.g. in the waters adjacent to northern Argentina, Uruguay and southern Brazil), affecting immature birds throughout the year and adults outside the breeding season.

Scientist holds 2 (of many) albatrosses killed as accidental by-catch and recovered for study.
