The first successful invasive rat eradication project was announced by the Chagos Conservation Trust on the 10th of April 2017 - It was funded by the Darwin Initiative. “Successfully eradicating the black rats has, and will continue to, increase biodiversity on the island that provides a safe haven for seabirds to nest and contributes to a healthy ecosystem more widely"- Pete Carr, CCT trustee and terrestrial biodiversity specialist. CCT's now aims to conduct an archipelago wide restoration programme, which would eradicate rats, increase the health of islands and also help the reefs to recover.
