The salt rakers from Bermuda visited seasonally, but left their donkeys.  They created wells with ramps, to allow the donkeys to access fresh water at different levels of the water table. 

This well, at South Wells, Grand Turk, is a good example of the ramp construction which allowed the donkeys to access fresh water at different water levels.
