St Helena Island, situated in the South Atlantic (-15°55’27.84”S -5°43’4.80”W), is one of the remotest settled islands in the world. A 47 square mile island (10.5 miles [16.9km] long and 6.5 miles [10.5km] wide), its nearest land is Ascension Island, which is 703 miles (1125km) to the North West. It is 1200 miles (1950 km) from the South West coast of Africa and 1800 miles (2900km) from the coast of South America.
