Threats / Problems / Issues

As is the case on many islands around the world, introduced species have had a significant negative impact on SGSSI’s native species through predation, competition, and habitat alteration. Reindeer, introduced for recreational purposes in the early 1900s, overgrazed much of the native vegetation/flora, for example the tussac grassland.

Descendents of the introduced reindeer, now removed.
