Features of Natural Interest

Pitcairn Island's flora is of huge scientific interest. It has a tiny native flora of 82 species, but 11 of these are endemic and are globally threatened. The yellow fatu Abutilon pitcairnense was presumed extinct, but rediscovered by Carol Warren in 2003, near Tedside. Fortunately, cuttings were successfully taken, as the original site was destroyed in a landslide in 2004.

This photograph of yellow fatu Abutilon pitcairnense is part of the excellent display board on the Pitcairn ecotrail.
