People lived on Montserrat before Columbus discovered it in 1493.  They are sometimes referred to as Amerindians, Caribs, Arawaks or Tainos.  These indigineous people did not survive European colonisation. Columbus named the island after Santa Maria de Montserrate, the Mountain Abbey outside Barcelona in Spain, of which it reminded him.

Replica hut and pot artefacts from pre-Columbian times.
