Over-fishing and illegal fishing are an ongoing problem across Cyprus and in the SBAs. Despite restrictions on net-size and fishing depth, and on the time of day and time of year that various fishing activities are allowed, it is hard to monitor and police these activities. The marine fauna, including those with protected species status, are unfortunately at risk and fish numbers are declining.

Shipwreck at Akrotiri. It is said that this ship ran aground in a storm in the winter of 1967.
