Built in 1955, RAF Akrotiri is one of the few major RAF stations located outside the United Kingdom.   A Permanent Joint Operating Base, RAF Akrotiri is the base of 84 Squadron who perform search and rescue duties, as well as a support role for the UN peacekeeping forces on the island.  It is also the spring training grounds of the RAF display team the Red Arrows.
