A wide variety of shapes and sizes of baskets were developed fit for purpose. Double baskets, sirizes, were placed on donkeys and were used to carry salt from the lakes. Workers carried their olives and cheese for lunch in small, lidded baskets called korokolios. Bread was kept in a tapatzia (soft basket with a cord) hanging from the ceiling in the kitchen. Talaria (a type of soft basket), is still widely used today, for draining and pressing cheeses. |
