Cyprus has a long tradition in weaving.  The practice was highly developed during Byzantine times and throughout the Venetian and Lusignan dynasties. Cyprus established an international reputation for its weaving, and Cypriot silk and woollen fabrics were sought after for their high quality and exported in great quantities to mainland Europe.

Phyti is the most important type of Cypriot weaving. It features colourful, geometric texture designs or ploumia, made on natural coloured cotton cloth, and was used in local traditional dress.
