Akrotiri Salt Lake is the largest inland water system on Cyprus with an area of 10.65 km2.  It is located in the WSBA and designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, and a Special Protection Area for birds under the Game and Wild Birds Ordinance (implementing the provisions of the Birds Directive).  It is also a candidate Special Area of Conservation under the Protection and Management of Nature and Wildlife Ordinance (implementing the provisions of the EU Habitats Directive).

More than half the lake is less than 30cm deep, making it a welcome stopover for thousands of migrating wading birds.
