According to some sources, over 80% of the mangroves have been destroyed, mainly for tourism development. Some of the remaining important mangrove areas are to be found at East End on Jost van Dyke, and Beef Island, including the Hans Creek Fisheries Protected Area.

Bar Bay, a proposed Ramsar Site and one of the last mangrove stands on Tortola, is surrounded by developments, including marinas, and is subject to pollution.
