Existing and potential Ramsar Sites: The international Ramsar Convention on wise use of wetlands recognises sites which are of global importance.  Such recognition enhances opportuntities for tourism. West Anegada has been designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. This has been very useful in further protecting the area, and has supported additional projects on Anegada. Other sites were identified by the UKOTCF review of existing and potential Ramsar sites for BVI. These include: Anegada Eastern Ponds and The Horseshoe Reef; Fat Hogs and Bar Bays (east end of Tortola); Jost Van Dykes  East End and Little Jost Van Dyke, as well as the need for other sites not yet specified.. At the centre of the Ramsar philosophy is the “wise use” concept. It has at its heart the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands and their resources, for the benefit of all. For more information on the Ramsar convention see the Ramsar website
