The English set up plantations to grow cotton and sugar. By the end of the 18th century, sugar, molasses and rum were BVI's main exports. Following emancipation of the slaves in 1834, and a hurricane, the plantation system came to an end.

This stone windmill, on Mount Healthy, Tortola, was once part of an 18th century sugar plantation.
