Shipwrecks: Some of the most popular dive sites are on old shipwrecks. The Wreck of the Rhone Marine Park, established in 1980 incorporates the submerged wreck of the Royal Mail Steamer Rhone, which sank in 1867 with the loss of about 120 lives. The park extends across to the island of Dead Chest, where Blackbeard is said to have put ashore 15 men after a mutiny, with only a bottle of rum. Hence the song “15 men on a Dead Man’s Chest, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.”

The wreck of the Rhone is a marine park.
