Mexican thorn is spreading over the majority of Ascension Island’s habitats. This could have devastating effects, such as contributing to the degradation of volcanic features, making breeding habitats for seabirds unsuitable and, as it spreads across beaches, preventing turtles from nesting. Two seed-eating bruchid beetle species Algarobius prosopis and Neltumius arizonensis were introduced to Ascension in an endeavour to control the Mexican thorn. Two other insect species, one a mirid and the other a psyllid, have also been found to attack the Mexican thorn on Ascension.
