It has been shown through regular coastal monitoring that seabirds are returning to the mainland, with the number of nests increasing on a yearly basis. May 2002 saw the first record of seabird recolonization of the mainland with the first species to return being the masked booby Sula dactylatra. A census carried out in 2015 during peak masked booby breeding found 1537 pairs on the mainland.
