Introduction

The isolation of Ascension combined with the fact that it is a young island at approximately one million years old, has left it relatively species-poor in terms of its fauna and flora. However, many of the species that it does have are endemic to the Island (that is, they occur nowhere else). It is an important breeding site for seabirds and turtles, and has a rich marine biodiversity.
