With the Territory taken over by the Royal Marines in 1815, Ascension was then supervised by the British Board of Admiralty until 1922 when it became a Dependency of St Helena. In fact, the capital Georgetown represents one of the most intact 19th century garrison sites of the Royal Marines remaining in the Southern Hemisphere.
