Two crustaceans endemic to Ascension are Typhlatya rogersi and Procaris ascensionis. Both are shrimp species that are found in pools located east of Mars Bay, inland from Shelly Beach. These pools form an ‘anchialine’ habitat, meaning that although the pools are 50-100m inland and have no surface connection to the sea, they are connected to it underground and therefore contain salt water and are influenced by tides. In addition to the two endemic shrimps, the pools also contain a variety of other endemic species including coral in the genus Favia and globular green alga Valonis ventricosa
