While Ascension may have low species diversity relative to other tropical islands, it makes up for this with its unique species which, in terms of marine biodiversity, include 11 fish endemic to Ascension, a further 16 shared endemics with St Helena, and 2 endemic shrimp species. An example of a fish species endemic to Ascension is the resplendent angelfish Centropyge resplendens which is a small blue fish found in deep water.
