Features of Natural Interest

The population of the Critically Endangered fern Pteris adscensionis is relatively restricted in distribution at present, with plants persisting on the shady cinder banks at the bottom of Breakneck Valley near the Norfolk Island pine plantation, and a larger population on the trachyte cliffs of the north side of Cricket Valley. Spores have been successfully germinated at the Green Mountain nurseries, cared for until maturity and are being reintroduced into their natural habitat.

Cricket Valley is a large elliptical (600x450metres), flat-floored depression (150metres deep) with almost vertical walls. The valley probably originated as an explosion crater but was subsequently partially filled by ash.
